Often called the birthplace of modern conservation because it was home to Gifford Pinchot, Pike County, PA continues to be at the forefront of land conservation issues. Heron’s Eye helped to produce the public television documentary Nature’s Keepers: A Community of Conservationists, about Pike’s 150-year heritage of land stewardship.
- We served as the on-the-ground liaison to grassroots community activists.
- Our efforts earned a 2008 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence.
- Nature’s Keepers is a model for other rapidly growing communities.
The documentary film provided a highly visible outlet for the people of Pike County to share their history, express their values and declare their intention to choose a future based on their conservation heritage.
In addition to highlighting the fascinating legacy of conservation in Pike County, Nature’s Keepers gave special attention to how this legacy continues today through citizen efforts in response to rapid growth and development.
